Amazon flagged a listing. 😫

One of my client's listing was flagged and they were asked to provide lab test reports within 2 weeks. They didn't have any. Lesson learnt very hard way. QIMA could help them with fast turnaround time of 5 days to issue the report during a Chinese holiday season. If this wasn't done timely, all the inventory would have been disposed off. Yet another case of reactionary approach towards lab testing & certification while it's mandatory thing to do and should be number 1 priority from the very beginning.

Best time to do an inspection?

It's definitely a must to do a pre-shipment inspection, but a During Production Check of 1 manday can also help to check for issues early on and fix them.

On the same topic, a Pre-Shipment Inspection should usually be aimed to be done at least 3 working days before the shipment so that there is enough time to discuss the defects with the supplier and having the products reworked.

Exactly right. And if you do decide to do an inspection earlier in the production to catch issues early on that is great. But remember that even if you do that, you always need to do that final inspection once all goods are 100% produced. Otherwise the message you would give is that no QC needs to be done and good don't need to be good quality after that earlier inspection. That would certainly be a big mistake. I know a few clients that also learned that lesson the hard way unfortunately!

Easier products for beginners

As for the beginners, costs and margins are the biggest concerns and they can't balance much with multiple products, it's better for them to start with simpler products that have lesser materials and aren't high risk, like let's say a kitchen knife or a rain poncho in a single colour. Thought?

Sure - in their e-commerce journey, if they are just starting out that's great advice. I wouldn't start with an electronic toy for children under 3 years of age where there are many, many required tests. A welcome doormat is another great example of an easy to source, low cost item with almost no testing required.

2 critical things for e-commerce: Compliance & Quality

When selling on an e-commerce platform like Amazon for example, the 2 most critical things to concern yourself about are Compliance and Quality.

  1. Compliance: I need to make sure my products are Legal to Sell

  2. Quality: I need to make sure I am selling good quality products

Why?

Compliance:

  • If the products are not legal, they will be delisted and possibly destroyed and you lose your investment

Most people that are selling on marketplaces like Amazon source products from Asia or any country/region and never see the products, since those are shipped straight to Amazon warehouses. Therefore, quality and compliance play a critical role and it is a recommended best practice to increase the success of your online business.
